"there's great berms and jumps on the raven black at byrgwm" my grandson told me. a few days before i might have assumed he was running a temperature and speaking in tongues, but one day into our stay i understood what he was saying and could only agree. that is, i've seen the snaking rides from above, from the gentler forest paths. i've not actually ridden the perilous downward trails with their sinuous loops and curves over rocks and round pines or hanging in the air above precipitous drops. i'm a grandmother, for heaven's sake. i'm the one with a rucksack full of sandwiches and flasks of hot chocolate, trekking steadily with my trusty walking pole in one hand and the chubby little paw of the youngest grandson in the other. we pootled through ferny paths and mossy landscapes, in shady beech groves and over bridges spanning sparkling streams. the oldest (60) and the youngest (3)of the party, we had a different agenda and a safer route than the rest of the party. we'd lie down to examine starry moss and pretty lichens up close, we sang nonsense songs and played pooh sticks. we took our own sweet time and caught up with the muddy members of the family in a clearing with a view down through the pine trees to a sunny slope of meadow. there's magic in those hills. we'd rented a farmhouse up under the breast of the brechfa forest near abergorlech, called the forest house. spring water came out of the taps. the air was as invigorating as pure oxygen. there were forest paintings in every room, as if the outside had come in, like the robin who crossly flew into the kitchen in the mornings if no-one remembered to put breakfast out for him in the yard - bacon rind was his preference. in the afternoons, while the biking generations picked pine needles and oak twigs from their hair and sluiced down spattered trail bikes, the pootling generations waded in the shallows at llansawel and hunted for that geological phenomenon, the gorlech stone, hefty sandstone nodules decorated with quartz, unique to this bit of wales. sand martins dipped round us as we waded, they had excavated settlements on the high banks. along with the red kites, these were the first sand martins i'd ever seen. raven blacks, byrgwm, gorlech stones and berms, red kites, abergorlech, swallows and sand martins, words and places to be savoured and stored in the city dwellers lexicon and resurrected next spring when we make the journey again. i've had a mountain bike for my birthday. a raven black lies waiting for me deep in byrgwm." l. elliott, wiltshire powered by create
